Raiders of the Lost...Beer


Ever watched Raiders of the Lost Ark and wished that Indiana Jones had been searching for something other than the Holy Grail? You know, like the Holy Grail filled with Beer.

Well worry no more beerologists, as this month's Smithsonian magazine online brings us just such a man: "Dr. Pat,” as he’s known at Dogfish Head, is the world’s foremost expert on ancient fermented beverages, and he cracks long-forgotten recipes with chemistry, scouring ancient kegs and bottles for residue samples to scrutinize in the lab.

Among his notable beerology accomplishments:

  • Identifying the world’s oldest known barley beer (from Iran’s Zagros Mountains, dating to 3400 B.C.)
  • Discovering the oldest grape wine (also from the Zagros, circa 5400 B.C.)

Bay Area Brew Fest

Just a reminder if you live in the Bay Area- it's Brew Fest weekend!

Just in time for the summer chill, the 2nd Annual Bay Area Brew Festival is a three-hour waterfront swill fest on June 11th.

Like last year's sold out event, look for dozens of international and domestic beers (Stone Brewing Co., Napa Smith, Drake's Brewing, Lhasa Beer, etc), and SF’s best food trucks (food sold separately).

Located at Fort Mason, admission is $40 (2pm to 5pm) and $50 for VIP (1pm to 5pm) and includes... unlimited beer!

California Beer Festival goes to Santa Cruz County

The California Beer Festival (CBF) will be in Santa Cruz County on July 16th!

If you aren't familiar with the festival, CBF's primary goal is to spotlight the craft beer movement and in general to just celebrate amazing beer!

For one low price of $40, participants will receive a souvenir tasting cup to sample some of the best craft beers on tap from around California, play bocce ball and listen to four live bands.

Lost Abbey Veritas 009 for private purchase











The three year wait is over!

Brewer The Lost Abbey will release the next in its coveted Veritas small-batch barrel-aged beers on Saturday, May 28, 2011.


The most complex and time-consuming beer released by the brewery to date, Veritas 009 took more than three years and periods in bourbon and wine barrels to create. With only 100 cases available, Veritas 009 will not reach general distribution and will be available for purchase directly from the brewery only. The 750ml cork-stoppered bottles will be $35 each and strictly limited to four bottles per person.
