As porters go, this one is a little bit dry and very kicky, making the Steelhead Scotch Porter work equally as well as a dessert drink, or with a meal. From the company's description of this strong ( 6.7% abv) porter, I learned that porter is an English working class brew. Mad River credits the Scottish peated and German Rauch malts with the smoky hint of sweetness. I was intrigued by the ever so slightly metallic undercurrent. You come away from a swallow of this stuff thinking that it drinks surprisingly light for a scotch ale, and that it has a more complicated flavor than most porters.

The label art here is sort of fun. I like the idea of my beer originating in the "heart of the redwoods." It's got a fish leaping up from rapids, and old fashioned lettering. Bright colors. If you find it sold near you, you're in for a versatile and satisfying treat.
