Guinness Beer Chips are a THING
Hey there beer lovers!
If you love Guinness...we're pretty positive that you're going to love the latest thing on the market, Guinness Chips. Guinness teamed up with Burts Potato Chips to create the ultimate chip for beer lovers.
We had the chance to taste them ourselves, and let's just say that we're going to be stocking up on these ourselves. They have a rich, smoky taste with a slight hint of Guinness.
How well do you know your world beers?
It's on my bucket list to try as many different beers and visit as many different breweries around the world as possible. It's a lot of work, but hey, nobody said it was gonna be easy...
I still have a long way to go, and it probably doesn't help that I'm always adding new items to my "to-drink" list! What should I add to my world beer list?
Beer and social media
You couldn’t be blamed for seeing social media as a wall for the dreary graffiti of the mundane. It has though, the capability to be so much more than that. When approached appropriately and embraced in friendly informal arms, it can be a powerful means of cheap or even free advertising and product awareness.
Let me hit you with some numbers.
There are 200 million Google searches per day.
The more social media you use, the higher up these searches you appear.
Companies with little or no social media presence saw an average annual decline in sales of -6%
Companies with a large social media presence saw an average annual growth in sales of 18%
Today’s society is, like it or not, inextricably linked with computers and the internet. Our children are…

Beer Trivia (Did You Know?)
The founding fathers of America were planning to land The Mayflower and settle further south in warmer climates, but instead chose Plymouth Rock because they had run out of beer. —- I wonder who owned the liquor store.
George Washington owned his own brewery. —- Is that The First Lady? No, its the thirst, lady.
At any given time, an estimated 0.7% of the whole world is drunk. —- I’ll drink to that! HIC!
The American National Anthem, ‘The Star Spangled Banner’, was originally an old English drinking song from a famous London men’s club. It was previously called ‘To Anacreon In Heaven’ and the original words were a dedication to the ancient Greek bard that wrote songs and poetry celebrating booze, women and song. —- I’ll drink to that. Great Lakes Coming to a Freezer Near You
ABC Channel 5 reports that Great Lakes Brewing Company and local Cleveland ice cream maker Mitchell's are combining both products to make Christmas Ale ice cream. The ice cream is made from the leftover Christmas Ale that didn't get bottled. The ice cream will also feature local honey, ginger snaps and cinnamon. Unfortunately, it will only be available at the five Mitchell's locations in Northeast Ohio and at Great Lakes Brewery.
This is the second time Mitchell’s and GLBC have come together to make a frozen treat. Edmund Fitzgerald Porter Chocolate Chunk is already at GLBC’s pub.
For more on the story, check out ABC Channel 5's full story here. Would you try this frozen treat? Let us know in the comments!
The Social Network for Beer
Good reports that a new service, Untappd, has just been launched that will serve as a social network for beer lovers. You can be friends with others and check in to breweries like on similar social networks such as Foursquare. Once you check in to a brewery, you select which beer you are drinking, and can then go and rate it for your friends and others to read.
The app also allows users to read other reviews of beers, see what beers are popular where you are, and make lists of which beers you liked or want to try, so you can easily remember. The full article can be found right here.
Is this something that you would be interested in trying? Let us know!
Pumpkin Beers are Here, Again
It's that time of the year again, when we've had our fair share of special Oktoberfest festbiers and we begin looking for the next seasonal wave of specialty brews. It seems like only yesterday that I was drinking Summer ales, but I'm already starting to see the pumpkin beers at the corner store.
Oh, pumpkin beers. The concept has certainly been played out at this point, but their existence is necessary to remind us that we should always be pushing the limits of beer flavor. We also need to remember that our beer drinking habits should change with the seasons and never become redundant. Alas, pumpkin beers are already a bit redundant, and if you really enjoy them, it's difficult to separate the "meh" from the "mmm". To help you out, I've ta…
A Canned Revolution
My last blog post on the Beer Wiki, A Bottle Revolution, talked about the increase of bottled beers over beers on tap. However, I have been meaning to address a more common debate. Going to the bar and choosing bottle, can, or draft is one thing, but what about purchasing beers for the homestead? Do you prefer bottles or cans?
Enthusiastic craft beer drinkers will have noticed a lot of cans popping up in the past year from the microbreweries, and unlike Budweiser, the graphics are beautiful and the beer doesn't taste like pee. Let's take a look at some of the reasons why breweries are shifting towards canned production:
- Beer often tastes better in a can than in a bottle, especially considering that bottled beer can easily go bad when light p…
An Oktoberfest guide to German beer glasses
Are you from Germany or coming to that country for its famous Oktoberfest beer festival in the coming month? To fully appreciate German beer, you not only need to learn about its types, but also which special glass to use to properly drink each of them.
For example, full bodied lagers taste best in thick mugs - the handle is there to keep your hands off the mug so that the beer doesn't get warm before you finish it. Pilsner beers are traditionally enjoyed in cone-shaped glasses, while Weizen wheat beers in tall, hourglass shaped ones.
Real Bavarians also put a slice of lemon on top of their Weißbier. Dropping a kernel of rice into your beer is also a clever way of getting the bubbles going again after they fizzle out. Also remember not to dr…
2011 Cookbook Season Presents More Beer Books
From now until the beginning of 2012, expect to be inundated with a variety of new cookbooks--in other words, it's Cookbook Season!
While regional American cookbooks are stepping away from Southern cuisine and focusing more heavily on the Midwest, West Coast, and Texas for their inspiration, beer books are the leading topic of all booze books, putting wine and cocktails in the backseat.
Excited for more beer books? Comment below and tell us what you think! And even cooler--there are now two books devoted entirely to sausages, and what goes better with beer than sausages? Oh wait...more beer.

A Bottled Revolution
Unless you've been living under a rock (or in a dry country), you've seen the popularity of craft beers spike in recent years. We are witnessing a craft beer revolution, as drinkers are shelling out the extra cash for unique and innovative beers instead of mass-produced watered-down suds. This widespread return to local, real ales has many possible side-effects, but one that is hotly debated is the matter of drinking vessel. But before we go any further...
I had to ask first, so you're answer would not be swayed by the following information. You may not have known, but the craft beer revolution has also sparked a trend towards bottled beers. Initially, it seems quite obvious, as microbreweries can only produce limited quantities, so most of…
Cigar Flavored Beer
Smoking socially while enjoying some beer is a scene that plays out in bars constantly. It should come as no surprise that eventually a craft brewery would get the idea of combining the two activities. The Cigar City Brewing combine has decide to create a beer combining some of these flavors in elements. In fact they have been successfully brewing with Spanish cedar which is the wood that is used in making Cuban cigars. This brewery also uses many unique other ingredients including - Cuban espresso coffee, cocoa, and jalapenos.
The company seems to be having great success as they have launched seven breweries through the state of Florida.

Patagonia Unearths Secret Beer Link
In Patagonia, scientists have discovered what they believe is a missing link to lagers. Scientists recently discovered this rare form of yeast growing on the trees in the forests of Argentina. The yeast, known as Saccharomyces eubayanus, lives on the tree trunks.
This scientific discovery was the result of 5 years of work and research. So how exactly does this relate to beer. According to the scientists, they believe that the yeast eventually made it's way to Europe where it hybridized with the yeast used to make ales. Scientists had long known that lagers were comprised of a breed of wild yeasts.
There are plenty of more specific details about this whole process if you are interested, please view the source.

Google Talk with Brewmaster Shane Welch
@Google Talks brings authors, innovators, musicians, and various speakers to the Google campus to enlighten a small crowd and millions of viewers on YouTube on their passion, not unlike the critically acclaimed TED talks.
The video below is a Google Talk from Shane Welch, the founder and brewmaster of Sixpoint Craft Ales (Brooklyn, NY). Originally from Milwaukee, Shane became obsessed with brewing his own beer in college and chose to abandon academia for a chance to apprentice at a brewery. He later moved to Brooklyn to found his own brewery, and the rest is history, as Sixpoint Craft Ales are now a staple for beer drinkers in New York City. The video is long at 1 hour and 20 minutes, but if you're a burgeoning home brewer, connoisseur, or b…
Beer Labels - Three Floyds, The Brew Kettle, and More
As seen in a previous blog post here, beer labels are extremely important to the feeling and the look of the beer. While the label isn't everything, it is extremely important in helping distinguish one beer from the other. Hence, it comes as no surprise that companies are constantly changing their labels and trying to improve them. They want their labels to stand out on the shelf so that you select their beer over any other beer. Check out this new gallery of beer labels.
Which label is your favorite? I really like the label for the Boogoop Buckwheat Wine by Three Floyds and Mikkeler, but I'm very intrigued by what the Chili Beer tastes like by Calpooia Brewing Company.

Sierra Nevada Looking to Purchase a New Brewery
In 2010, craft brew pioneer Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. produced 779,065 barrels of beer at their Chico, California headquarters. In two-and-a-half to three years time, that facility will no longer be able to support increasing demand, according to brewery co-founder and president Ken Grossman. Sales have been up 7%-8%, thanks to certain new beers such as the Torpedo Extra IPA, which has been growing at a %40 rate (I tried one for the first time last weekend and enjoyed it immensely). Because things are going so swell, they need to make more beer, but they will not be expanding the current brewery.
Instead, Sierra Nevada is shopping around the East Coast for an appropriate place to open a new brewery, which is a bit ironic considering the Sie…
Introducing the World's First Home Brewing Appliance
New Zealander Ian Williams was the youngest man to ever earn the title of Master Brewer from the Institute of Brewing in London. He was making a name for himself as a brewing consultant and beer taster, but when his uncle challenged him to create the world's first home brewery appliance, Williams teamed up with food technology engineer Anders Warn to make it a reality. After five years of research and development, the WilliamsWarn Personal Brewery is finally available to the public, and this stainless steel beauty brews your beer in only 7 days. Now you just need to come up with $5,660.
Yes, it's one of the most expensive kitchen appliances out there, but come on, it's without question the best kitchen appliance that money can buy. If you're…
Return of the Dark Intrigue
A glorious day is fast approaching for dark beer enthusiasts. Victory Brewing Company, in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, will release cases of their most coveted beer on November 23rd. Last year, the brewery decided to do a little experiment, taking their signature Storm King Stout and aging it in bourbon oak barrels from the Jim Beam and Heaven Hills distilleries. The result was a beer so shadowy and mysterious that it was called Dark Intrigue, and the brewery sold every case in 43 minutes.
This time around, with the hopes that Dark Intrigue has already become a cult beer, Victory has been aging enough Storm King Stout in the bourbon barrels to bottle 3,000 cases of Dark Intrigue. If you live in the area and love a good stout, you must try this …
Craft Beer Volume up 14% in 1st Half 2011, Says Brewer's Association
Good news, for those who love or make craft beer. The Brewer's Association has reported that in the first half of 2011, dollar sales for craft beers were up 15%. The volume of craft beers is up 14%, which is a success compared to 2010's 9%.
Beyond good news for beer lovers, this is good news for the economy in general. The jobs that make up the craft beer industry are up to 100,000 jobs-- a rise in this industry is good news all around.
Paul Gaza, director of the Brewer's Association, says, "There is a growing interest in establishing new breweries. It seems like every day we are hearing about a brewery in planning. Will they all make it? No, but many will if they produce high-quality, interesting craft beers and can get them to market throu…
A Weeping Radish
Radishes aren't the first thing one normally thinks about when they decide they want to drink a delicious, frothy beer. However, Weeping Radish is now officially North Carolina's oldest brewery. The brewery was started 25 years ago by Uli Bennewitz. They brew all their beers according to Reinheitsgebot Purity Law of 1516, which was issued by Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria. This law stated that beer could only be brewed using malt, hops, and water. Later, the law allowed for yeast to be added.
This brewery believes heavily in keeping a farm to fresh ethos. This year they decided to incorporate hops grown from Asheville, North Carolina in their Indian Pale Ale.
Where can you go to purchase beer from Weeping Radish? On their Web Store. Cases go for 39 …
Beer: The Secret Ingredient For the Best Cookies
Most of us probably associate beer with our favorite pubs, bar snacks, and perhaps dancing or bar games. We probably don't associate beer with baked goods. But recently, bakers have started using beer to create intensely flavorful baked cookies and cupcakes.
Cougar Mountain Baking Co., in Seattle, Washington, has started using craft beer from local brewery Pike Brewing Co., to create what they call "Double Chocolate XXXXX Stout Cookies", a seasonal flavored cookie available only in October, and originally inspired by a request for an Oktoberfest cookie.
Tee & Cakes Bakery, in Boulder, Colorado, has also caught onto the beer and baked goods trend. Kim Boos, pastry chef and owner, has started using beer in two varieties of her cupcakes.

International Beer Day
In probably a holiday that doesn't need to exist, today is International Beer Day. This holiday was started by Jesse Avshalomov and established by Avshalomov, Evan Hamilton, Aaron Araki, and Richard Hernandez. There are hundreds and hundreds of restaurants who are participating in this celebration. Over at Fox News, they have compiled a list of four beers that they believe would be perfect for enjoying today.
- Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge - This is a Flander's Red Ale from Belgium. It is light in alcohol content but heavy on flavor so it makes a perfect session beer.
- Hitachino Nest Red Rice - Hitachino seems to be the beer of choice when it comes to Japanese favorites. This beer is relatively strong, weighing in at a hefty 7 percent ABV. Many peop…
Beer Labels To Observe

Beer Garden Developing
San Franciscans can be delighted as they will soon have a brand new beer garden to enjoy. The popular kraut eatery Suppenküche will be opening a brand new beer garden in August. The owner of the restaurant, Aaron Hulme, said that the beer garden will include a full service restaurant.
As he told EaterSf, all the pieces are coming together and everything should be up in mid-August. He said that there will be a dozen draft beers when the restaurant opens and the menu will also be full of sausages and pretzel sandwiches. The beer garden menu will also feature full roasted animal meats at some point.
All I can say is the more beer gardens, the better. Keep those glasses full of beer.

Russia Declares Beer Alcoholic
In shocking news, Russia has finally decided to catch up with the rest of the world and declare that beer is shockingly an alcoholic beverage. To be fair to the Russians, they have just now declared that all beer is alcoholic. Prior to the passing of this new law, any beer that was under ten percent ABV was considered a foodstuff. What most of the world would call strong beers, Russia wasn't even declaring them alcoholic. Interesting.
According to the BBC News, Russia's consumption levels are already twice the critical level according to the World Health Organization. Russians also tend to be favoring beer more than they favor vodka. In fact, beer sales are up almost forty percent.
This new law is a measure to help the Russian government con…

Don't fret Harry Potter fanatics, though the series has come to an end, we can still have plenty of fun and enjoyment from the series. In fact, there is a recent video that has been posted on Hungry Nation that details how one could create their own Butterbeer.
- Stir together 3/4th cup brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons of water in a saucepan over medium high heat.
- When it comes to low boil, place a candy thermometer in the pan and stop stirring. Keep an eye on it until it comes to 240 degrees.
- In another bowl, place 5 tablespoons of softened butter, a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract.
- When the first pan reaches 240 degrees, add the other ingredients into it. Then add a quarter cup of heavy crea…
The Beer Dispenser: Beer Technology
Ever been to a social gathering and the food is just about ready when you realize that the beer to go with the food is still warm? While generally this would usually be a problem, this problem is now solved by one of the latest releases in beer technology. The On-Ice Mixed Drink and Beer Dispenser will hold up to eighty ounces (that's two forty ounces or 6.67 12 oz beers for the math impaired).
This item is currently available for the low price of $44.95. I could see how this would come in use while watching Sunday football. Is this any item that you would purchase?

Beer Goes to Infinity and Beyond
We all know beer tastes better cold, but does it taste better in space? You will soon be able to find out. A beer space tour is being organized by the Thirsty Swagman crew for 2012 or 2013. Be one of the first people to drink beer in space.
There are two “Beer in Space” flight options: a zero gravity or parabolic flight from $9,900 and a space flight from $95,000. The zero gravity tour takes a small group of people 35,000 feet above earth so you can experience drinking beer (or any other drink of choice) in zero gravity.
During the space flight riders will travel 300,000 feet to the edge of the atmosphere at three times the speed the speed of sound. The beer that will be available has been specifically brewed by 4 Pines Brewing Company for s…
The American Invasion: Craft Beer Makes a Bang in Britain
This time it’s not The Beatles, it’s beer. This time it’s not Britain, it’s America. That’s right, American craft beers are invading bars across the U.K. The innovative brewing, new flavors, and creative branding are some of the reasons the British are buying American beers.
U.S. craft beers are gaining popularity across the Atlantic and some brewers in the U.K. are trying to follow suit. But without some of the hop strains that have been developed in America in the last 30 years they will have a hard time copying the flavors. Hops like Amarillo, Cascade and Citra are commonly used and were developed in the U.S. Cascade hops are the finishing hops used in Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, which is sold in U.K. supermarkets.
The unique ingredients are …
Raiders of the Lost...Beer
Ever watched Raiders of the Lost Ark and wished that Indiana Jones had been searching for something other than the Holy Grail? You know, like the Holy Grail filled with Beer.
Well worry no more beerologists, as this month's Smithsonian magazine online brings us just such a man: "Dr. Pat,” as he’s known at Dogfish Head, is the world’s foremost expert on ancient fermented beverages, and he cracks long-forgotten recipes with chemistry, scouring ancient kegs and bottles for residue samples to scrutinize in the lab.
Among his notable beerology accomplishments:
- Identifying the world’s oldest known barley beer (from Iran’s Zagros Mountains, dating to 3400 B.C.)
- Discovering the oldest grape wine (also from the Zagros, circa 5400 B.C.)
- Cataloguing the ea…

Dillon Dam Brewery Wins Awards
Sometimes it's nice to just drink a beer for the sake of drinking a beer. But wouldn't you rather be bragging how you are drinking award winning beer? Two Colorado based brewing companies, Dillon Dam Brewery and Pug Ryan's Steakhouse and Brewery recently won awards at the North American Beer Awards in Idaho.
The Dillon Dam Brewery had the honor of taking home two bronze medals - one for their McLuhr's Irish Stout and the other for Sweet George's Brown. McLuhr's is an Irish style stout, while Sweet George's Brown is a creamy English-style ale.
Pug Ryan's Steakhouse and Brewery received a silver for its Great Scott Scottish Ale. The owner told the Summit Daily that the beer is “one of our more prolific medal winners over the years."

Far East Craft Beer Boom
We already know that the good old USA has been experiencing an ongoing expansion of appreciation for craft beer. Now the Japanese are in on the game and movement too. This can only be good news for all of us beer appreciators around here. Slate contributor, Mark Garrison, discusses a craft beer bar that he discovered in the heart of Tokyo's Roppongi district. In this bar, he realized the explosiveness of the craft beer movement as he encountered 19 taps each offering a local beer.
Most interested are the unique Japanese beer flavors that these local brewers are using - including ginger, yuzu, and even fist-sized Uramura oysters. It is interesting to note that the formation of microbreweries in Japan was illegal before 1994. Japan, much like…
Nicer Beer Can Chicken
With Father's Day coming up on Sunday, many men will be spending their weekend out on the grill and what better grill food is there than Beer can Chicken. Hamburgers and hot dogs? Sure, that might work if it's Memorial Day or Mother's Day, but this is Father's Day we are talking about. Treat your father or special man in your life properly and serve him some beer can chicken. Not sure what beer can chicken is? Then you are in luck as we can share a recipe with you (courtesy of Bon Appetit).
The real question is - what kind of beer should be used? Does it work better if you are using a nice craft beer as opposed to something commercialized like Budweiser or Coors Lite. One brave soul attempted a scientific experiment to find out. William Bost…
Single Hops Beers Highlight New Flavors
Traditionally, most beers are brewed with a variety of hops. However, recently there was been a change in the brewing process with an intent on focusing only on one individual variety of hops per beer. The idea is that they want beer drinkers and fanatics to develop a finer palette. The desire is for beer drinkers to develop an acute and distinct taste for each individual variety of hops.
One brewery who is particularly practicing this new brew philosophy is Samuel Adams. In their new Latitude 48 IPA Deconstructed 12-pack which retails for approximately fourteen dollars - they use five different international hop varieties. The five varieties of hops are England's East Kent Goldings, Germany's Hallertau Mittelfrueh, and Washington State's Simcoe…
World's Best Beer Commercial
What's going on with my buds who enjoy their suds? It's Friday so that means that a lot of you will probably be enjoying some delicious beers tonight. Whether you are a lager man, an ale head, or just a fan of all varieties of beer, there is one fact that we can all agree on and that fact is that this is an awesome beer commercial.
This beer commercial is courtesy of the Australian Hahn Brewery. The commercial reveals the brewery's secret brewing process - which apparently includes men dressed in drag, a series of exposing the beer to kung fu movies, drum solos (though this guy is definitely no Neal Peart), a beer trophy mountain, and many other crazy things.
There is no mention of how much it costs to produce one of these beers, and with bee…
