There are dozens of styles and substyles of beer. Any classification system is going to be somewhat arbitrary. Here we can list the main styles as best we can.
Also, the style of beer usually refers to some aspect of how the beer was produced, not to how it turns out. Thus there can be a great deal of overlap between styles in terms of taste, color, etc.
